More than 260 registrants attended
the meeting, arriving from 29 different countries including
Russia, Chinese Hong Kong, Japan, USA, New Zealand, Malaysia,
South Africa, Guatemala, Brazil, United Kingdom, Netherlands,
Chinese Taipei (Taiwan), Egypt, Belgium, Czech Republic,
Slovenia, United Kingdom, India, Australia, Italy, United Arab
Emirates, Germany, Iceland, Namibia, Swaziland, Sweden, Finland,
France and Lithuania.
The conference was held in
conjunction with the meeting of the South African Society for
Periodontology (SASP). The meeting began on Friday, 24 October
with a Joint Implantology Workshop presented under the auspices
of the SASP in association with the Academy of Prosthodontists
of South Africa and the South African Society for Dental
Implantology. The featured speakers were Professor Vincent
Iacono, Professor and Chair of Periodontology at the State
University of New York at Stony Brook, NY, USA, Dr. Egon Euwe of
Milan, Italy and master dental technician Mr. Ernst Hegenbarth
(Germany). That evening, a Welcome Cocktail Reception was held
in the new Cape Town International Convention Center.
The IAP meeting began on 25 October
with the overall theme of “Global Perspectives on Periodontal
Disease: Problems, Risks, Control and Reconstruction.” IAP
President Uros Skaleric (Slovenia) and Chair of the Local
Organizing Committee Wynand Dreyer (South Africa) presented the
welcoming remarks. Dr. Jorgen Slots (USA), presented the Keynote
Address entitled “Herpes viruses, the missing link between
gingivitis and periodontitis?” |
