The final day of the meeting
began with Session V, “Repair and Regeneration,” which was
chaired by Prof. Klaus Lang and included presentations by
Prof. Ugo Ripamonti (South Africa) on “Pleiotropism of Bone
Morphogenic Proteins: From Bone Induction to Cementogenesis
and Periodontal Ligament Regeneration,” and Prof Hidemi
Kurihara (Japan) on “New Mission of Periodontists Based on
Periodontal Regeneration with Bone Marrow Stem Cells.”
Following a coffee break and poster viewing, the final
session VI, chaired by Prof. Thomas Van Dyke began. Prof.
Klaus Lang (Switzerland) presented his paper on “The Role of
Implants in Treatment Planning for Periodontally Diseased
Dentitions” and Prof Vincent Iacono (USA) spoke on “Implant
Site Development Including Ridge Augmentation and Sinus
Grafts.” Thereafter, Prof. Uros Skaleric, formally turned
the presidency over to Prof. Angela Pack of New Zealand. Dr.
Pack spoke briefly, thanking the attendees, sponsors and the
organizing committee.
That afternoon, a joint
symposium with the South African Heart 2003 Congress
entitled “Periodontal and Cardiovascular Diseases” was
moderated by Prof. Wynand Dreyer (South Africa). The program
included presentations by Prof. Johan Moolman (South Africa)
on “The Inflammatory Hypothesis of Atherosclerosis,” Prof.
Roy Page (USA) on “Association Between Periodontitis and
Cardio-Vascular Disease: Pathological and Clinical
Implications,” Dr. Jan Lessem (USA) on “Clinical
Relationship between Atherosclerotic Heart Disease and
Chronic Periodontitis” and Prof. Steve Offenbacher (USA) on
“Periodontal Pathogen Antibody Response to Systemic
Inflammation and Cardiovascular Disease .
