Session I, Global Problems, was
chaired by incoming IAP President Prof. Angela Pack (New Zealand)
and featured three presentations. Dr. Hideo Miyazaki (Japan) spoke
on “Periodontal epidemiology: Problems in developing regions,” Prof
.Su Naidoo (South Africa) discussed “HIV/AIDS in Southern Africa: A
major problem,” and Prof Esmonde Corbet (Chinese Hong Kong) lectured
on “Periodontal disease in Asians.” Following a lunch and
visits to the exhibits and poster presentations, Session II,
entitled “Risk Assessment,” began under the chairmanship of Prof.
Mark R. Patters (USA). Dr. Thomas Van Dyke (USA) presented
“Management of risk for the periodontal patient: Identification and
treatment of susceptible individuals.” Following this, Session III,
entitled “Periodontal Medicine” was chaired by Prof. Yoji Murayama
(Japan) and featured presentations by Prof. Steve Offenbacher (USA)
speaking on “Periodontal Medicine: The Changing Face of
Periodontology,” Prof. Uros Skaleric (Slovenia) discussing
“Periodontal Disease and diabetes metabolic control” and Prof.
Fusanori Nishimura (Japan) presenting “Periodontal-Systemic
Connection in Multiple Risk Factor Clustering Syndrome
That evening, the attendees were guests at a dinner
symposium sponsored by OraPharma where recent research into the
efficacy of the locally-applied antibiotic Arestin@ in the
management of periodontitis was presented by several speakers
including Profs. Ray Williams (USA), Roy Page (USA), Jan Lessem
(USA), Stefan Renvert (Sweden), Uros Skaleric (Slovenia) and Mark
Patters (USA)
